MEXICO – A marathon series of selectmen’s meetings begins at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday when the board will continue discussions of ways to cut costs and reduce the town’s operating budget deficit.
The meetings were rescheduled from last week due to bad weather.
After discussing the budget, selectmen will meet with Water Board trustees at 5:30 p.m. to discuss office personnel arrangements.
The regular selectmen’s meeting starts at 6:30 p.m.
Board Chairman Arthur Bordeau said he believes the presumed municipal deficit previously believed to be around $300,000 will turn out to be somewhat less once the final audit report is made. He said town auditor Keel Hood of Fairfield is expected to present final figures within a month. The board has been discussing ways to reduce spending during the past couple of months.
During the selectmen’s meeting, Superintendent Jim Hodgkin and Rep. Randy Hotham, R-Dixfield, are expected to discuss the proposed school funding formula and how it could affect Mexico property owners.
Other agenda items include: deciding whether to hold a special election to fill out the term begun by former Selectman Monique Aniel, budget committee appointments, formation of a team to negotiate with employees of the highway and police departments, and a decision on the disposal of tax-acquired property.
Several police matters are also on the agenda including: whether to hire a temporary replacement for an officer and a discussion of where to have routine maintenance done on police cruisers.
A closed session with patrolman Mike Buotte at the end of the meeting is also scheduled.
