GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) – David Witthoft is making very good use of his Christmas present.
Since opening the gift – a Brett Favre jersey – on Christmas Day 2003, the Connecticut boy has been wearing it every day.
That’s 408 straight days and counting.
“I just kept doing it for fun,” said the 8-year-old from Ridgefield, Conn. “Some of the kids at school said, You are weird’ and stuff. But I’m not sure when I’ll stop.”
His goal is to establish a Guinness Book of Records mark on most consecutive days wearing a Packers jersey. No such record exists, Guinness officials said.
“David has a lot of sticktoitiveness,’ ” said his father Chuck Witthoft, who grew up in Milwaukee and kept his allegiance to the Packers through moves to Minnesota, California and Connecticut. “This wasn’t an idea of ours.”
And the child’s parents thought his interest would have died long ago.
“We kept thinking his interest would wear off,” said his mother Carolyn Witthoft, who got used to washing the shirt at night. “We don’t let him wear it to church but as soon as we get home, he puts it back on.”
But the jersey isn’t holding up as well as the boy’s enthusiasm. The No. 4 has all but worn off and the seams are taking a beating as he grows. He has no plans to replace it with a new jersey.
“Just another typical diehard cheesehead,” said Packers President Bob Harlan of the boy. “I hear from them all the time.”
Some of the boy’s classmates at Farmingville Elementary School cheer him every day, when he shows up with the same jersey.
