RUMFORD – March is a special month for SeniorsPlus and other agencies that provide Meals on Wheels to seniors and others who are housebound, because it is the time when a national effort is under way.

Known as “March for Meals,” the promotion was created several years ago by the Meals on Wheels Association of America to call attention to the problem of senior hunger in America. The slogan “No Senior Goes Hungry” is the rallying cry of the campaign.

The Rumford SeniorsPlus dining site will again conduct a penny drive throughout March. Anyone who would like to contribute pennies (or other denominations) can take them to the Rumford site at 50 Congress St., located directly across the street from the Rumford House of Pizza. Anyone who would like to have a donation picked up should call Kim at 364-3572.

The second-grade class at Meroby Elementary School in Mexico recently collected 94 pounds of pennies, which equaled $96.25. The donation will go directly toward the “March for Meals” campaign.

SeniorsPlus, the local area agency on aging, serves Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford counties, providing services designed to enrich the lives of seniors. Through programs such as Meals on Wheels, Partners in Caring and Information and Referral Services, SeniorsPlus is dedicated to helping seniors navigate the aging process.
