WINTHROP – Daniel Ralph Sanford, 69, a former resident of Bangor, died Sunday, April 24, in Winthrop at the Heritage Rehabilitation and Living Center where he had been a resident since 1999.

He was born in Lewiston, on Jan. 11, 1936, the son of Ralph and Eva (Tapley) Sanford. He graduated from Edward Little High School in Auburn, Class of 1954. He also graduated from Auburn, Maine, School of Commerce, Class of 1958, later known as Mid-State College. He attended the University of Maine in Orono. He graduated from American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service in New York City.

He was employed as a funeral director with Brookings-Smith Funeral Homes in Bangor for more than 30 years, retiring due to illness.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Bangor, a member of the choir and served on various committees, including being church treasurer. He was a former member and treasurer of the Bangor Community Concerts. He was a member of St. Andrews Masonic Lodge 83 in Bangor, all Scottish Rite bodies, Valley in Bangor, Maine Consistory 32nd Degree Masons in Portland, all York Rite Bodies in Bangor, and Katahdin York Rite College in Hampden. He was a member of Tuscan Chapter 148 OES in Bangor and past-patron and organist for more than 21 years. He was a former member and past-dean of American Guild of Organists, Bangor chapter.

He is survived by a brother, Richard Sanford and his wife, Thelma, of Greene; nephews, Bruce Sanford and his wife, Mary, of Greene, James Sanford and his wife, Beth, of Windham, Michael Sanford and his wife, Tammy, of Baileyville, and Shawn Sanford, of Greene; and nieces, Sandra Horton and her husband, Rick, of Ohio, and Stormi Lacroix and her husband, Brian, of Buckfield.
