LEWISTON – “Restore America: Communities at a Crossroads” is the theme for May’s 2005 National Preservation Month, and the Lewiston Historic Preservation Review Board is celebrating examples of preservation excellence in downtown Lewiston.

On Thursday, May 19, at 4 p.m., the board will present three historic preservation awards highlighting the following structures: Music Hall/Frye Block, 71 Lisbon St., now the District Court; Institute Jacques-Cartier, 275-279 Lisbon St., now Paul’s Clothing and Shoe Store; and the Odd Fellows Block, 182-190 Lisbon St., now Hardy, Wolf and Downing. The ceremony will take place at Hardy, Wolf, and Downing, and the public is invited.

Mayor Lionel Guay Jr. said, “Preservation Month provides an opportunity to showcase structures within the city of Lewiston that demonstrate our exceptional efforts toward protecting our city’s heritage whenever possible, and I applaud the Lewiston Historic Preservation Review Board for spotlighting what has been undertaken within the downtown.”

Board Chairman William Clifford said, “Lewiston is very fortunate to have so many fine buildings that have survived from the early 20th and late 19th centuries. We on the Preservation Review Board are delighted that these three buildings have recently been restored with taste and style. We sincerely thank the owners for their effort and leadership.”

Guay added, “Lewiston’s downtown has experienced a tremendous renaissance within the past few years, and it’s exciting to note that our heritage and our current vision of growth and continued development have united at District Court, Paul’s Clothing and Hardy, Wolf and Downing. We’re always seeking to achieve a balance between economic development and historic preservation, and these three structures are representative of that commitment.”
