RUMFORD – A video, “Song of Bernadette,” will be shown at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, May 15, at St. Athanasius St. John Church Parish Center on Franklin Street.

Society speaker

DIXFIELD – The Dixfield Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 12, in the Charter Meeting Room when Ben Conant will speak about the Oxford County Bicentennial and the towns that comprise the county. He will reveal facts about Dixfield and its role in the beginning of Oxford County. Refreshments will be served and the public is invited.

BETHLEHEM, N.H. – Charlie Niebling, policy director with the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests, will present “Preservation and Conservation: Finding the Elusive Balance in the White Mountain National Forest” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 12, at the Rocks Estate on Route 302.

Niebling will offer his perspective on what makes the national forest unique and what the future holds for the public lands. The program is part of a series of walks and talks sponsored by the USDA Forest Service during 2005 in honor of the agency’s 100th anniversary.

Welding course

MEXICO – Region 9 Learning Center will offer a beginning welding course from 6 to 8:30 p.m. beginning Monday, May 16.

Participants will learn the basic skills using a Miller 250 amp welder, an AC/DC welder and the Idealarc SP 250 MIG welder. It is limited to five students per section. Instructor will be Troy Bennett.

Classes will be held Mondays and Wednesdays for seven weeks. Tuition cost is $225, lab fee $30 and texts $6. For more information or to register call Region 9 Learning Center at 364-2012.

Spring concert

RUMFORD – The Mountain Valley High School Music Department will present the annual spring concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, in the Muskie Auditorium. The concert will feature the band, select vocal group and chorus.

Norlands speaker

RUMFORD – Billie Gammon from the Norlands will speak at a meeting of the Rumford Historical Society at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, in the Municipal Building conference room.

She will portray the “Widow Carver,” a Maine Pioneer woman of the 1700s. She had seven children to rear after her husband was lost at sea. The public is invited.

Also at that meeting, President Bill Weston will lead a discussion about the opening of the Lufkin Museum for the summer, the display of the Oxford County Quilt on that day and the accompanying yard sale.
