MEXICO – The Oxford County charter will still be delivered today, as scheduled, but instead of going to the Mexico Recreation Park, it will be delivered by horseback at the Mexico Recreation Center.
Louise Arsenault, chairwoman of the Citizens Advisory Board, said the rainy weather has resulted in the change of plans.
The riders, dressed in early 19th century garb, will gallop across Main Street from the town office parking lot, up Mitchell Street, then onto Recreation Drive and to the Mexico Recreation Center between 11 and 11:30 a.m.
Fourth-graders from the area’s elementary schools will be there to accept the charter. Postal cancellations will be available, and a variety of 19th century craft demonstrations will take place.
Events go from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The public is invited to join in on the festivities.
From Mexico, the document – a facsimile of the original charter written when Oxford County became a county 200 years ago this year – will go on to Dixfield on Wednesday.
The charter is being carried by horseback to every elementary school in Oxford County. The culminating celebration will take place in Paris on June 11.
