PORTLAND – Thomas Arthur Leavitt, 99, of South Portland, died Wednesday, June 1, at a Portland hospital.

He was born in Waldoboro, the son of Charles and Grace “Jacobs” Leavitt. He was educated in Sanford schools.

He was a longtime member of the Thornton Heights United Methodist Church in South Portland and a member of the Masonic Order Preble Lodge 143 of Sanford.

He worked for WCSH Radio and Television for more than 37 years and retired as chief engineer in 1973.

Survivors include his son, Duane; two grandsons, Garrett A. Leavitt and Zachary S. Leavitt; a niece, Carol (Gowen) Cail; two nephews, Richard Libbey and Roger Libbey; and a sister-in-law, Grace (Libbey) Downing.

He was predeceased by his wife, Carolyn Libbey Leavitt; a daughter, Ernestine; and two sons, Allen and Thomas.
