AUBURN- The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society received a donation of pet food from the students at the Henry L. Cottrell Elementary School in Monmouth on May 14. To earn the food, the students took part in a special reading program called “Read for Feed” and were asked to read books as a way to earn food for the thousands of unwanted animals the shelter helps each year.

The idea of helping the homeless pets provided the motivation to get the kids reading. Combined, all grades at the elementary school read a total of 9,315 books and raised 117 pounds of food.

In addition to donating a majority of the food for the program, the Hills Science Diet Co. provided all the students with a special reward for their effort.

The Humane Society provides a safe haven for approximately 3,600 sick, homeless and abused animals in the greater Androscoggin area a year.

The shelter is located at 3312 Hotel Road. Anyone interested in learning more about volunteering at the shelter or adopting an animal should call 783-2311 or visit the Web site at www.gahumane.org.
