AUBURN – Capt. Frank W. Hulett Post 1603, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Auxiliary joined the children and teachers of the Clover Day Care to commemorate the 228th birthday of the American Flag on June 14.

Each member of the Post and Auxiliary led a flag-bearing child on a parade through the nursing home.

Adults and children, residents and visitors joined in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance before singing patriotic songs. A flag to be retired was presented from Clover to VFW Americanism Chairman Jack Jackson. After demonstrating how to properly fold the flag, questions were answered as the preschoolers demonstrated the knowledge of the flag that they had learned.

The birthday of the flag was rarely noted until President Harry Truman passed a declaration on Aug. 3, 1949, proclaiming June 14 as Flag Day. Since then, patriots and veterans organizations have marked the occasion.

Members of Post 1603 and Auxiliary decided to participate in a manner that would allow that tradition to be remembered by those who had celebrated it in the past as well as those who will celebrate it into the future.
