AUBURN – A local man was killed early Wednesday when he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into the woods along Turner Street.

Police believe Charles Jenkins, 41, of Auburn, crashed about 1 a.m. It was a half-hour later before a passing motorist saw a light from the woods and called for help.

Jenkins was driving north on Turner Street, near Central Maine Community College, when he crashed. Later in the day, police were still trying to determine what caused Jenkins to lose control of his Harley-Davidson.

The section of Turner Street near the college is marked by a long curve and a hill. It was unknown if those road conditions contributed to the wreck.

Jenkins lives near the area and may have been driving home at the time of the accident. Police said he was not wearing a helmet.

Jenkins, who worked at Country Kitchen-LePage Bakeries in Lewiston, had purchased the Harley only three weeks ago, according to a friend.

It was the first fatal motorcycle accident in Auburn this year.
