FARMINGTON – Andrea Tyler sandwiched three teammate goals with a pair of her own as the University of Maine at Farmington cruised to a 5-0 win over St. Joseph’s in field hockey action on Friday.
It was all offense for the Beavers (1-0) as they outpaced the Monks (0-1) with a 24-to-1 margin in shots on goal. Goalies Rachel Sheloske and Lorena Borjas shared 35 minutes apiece in net for the Beavers, and had no save opportunities between them.
Kristy Veazie scored the first goal of the second half and recorded a pair of assists for the Beavers.
Maine 3, Ohio 2
ATHENS, Ohio – Nicole Emery redirected a rebound of a Meagan Connolly shot past goalkeeper Jennifer Cote for the game-winner, and Maine held on despite allowing a late goal for a 3-2 win over Ohio University.
Emery’s goal came only minutes after Kim Edwards broke a 1-1 tie on a 2-on-1 breakaway from the right side of the net. Rebecca Giroux stopped 10 shots between the pipes for Maine (4-2). Torrie Albini scored at 57:23 on a rebound for Ohio (1-3) to make it a one-goal game.
Women’s soccer
Fairfield 1, Maine 0
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Shannon Helm scored her first goal of the season in the final minutes of the first half, the lone score of the game as Fairfield downed the visiting Black Bears 1-0 in women’s soccer on Friday. Junior forward Laura Mrowka drew UMaine keeper Tanya Ardono off the goal line and fed the ball to Helm, who one-timed in the winning score.
