Saint Joseph’s College probably didn’t celebrate the outcome of its 4-3 field hockey loss to Castleton State on Sunday afternoon, but two local players produced plenty of reasons to smile before the disappointing, double-overtime finish.

Junior captain Monique Crawford of Peru produced her second and third goals of the season for St. Joe’s. Crawford, a Dirigo High School graduate, also set up the team’s other goal, scored by Sarah Kay of Lewiston.

Kay, who helped steer St. Dominic Regional High School to the regional final in the senior season of her prep career, scored three goals and doled out two assists last season. Her eight points ranked second on the squad.

Auburn’s Gina Gaetani is also enjoying significant playing time in her freshman campaign.

Elsewhere at St. Joe’s, sophomore Lindsey Rowbotham of Minot scored her first collegiate goal in a 5-1 victory over Mount Ida. That game featured a matchup between area goalkeepers Mallory Wilson of Gray for the Monks and Erica Belanger of Poland for Mount Ida’s Mustangs.

Danielle Somma of Gray and Lisbon’s Andrea Piela share the defensive spotlight for the St. Joe’s women’s soccer team, while St. Dom’s products Xue Chen of Lewiston and Jessica Desrosiers of Mechanic Falls are hitting the trails with women’s cross country.

Men’s soccer remained at the .500 mark with a recent tie against rival Southern Maine. Senior Dave Rosquete of Auburn, who played on a Class C championship squad at St. Dom’s, is a striker for the Monks.

Healy hitting stride

Kristen Healy of Turner has started every game in her field hockey career at the University of Maine. And Healy, now a sophomore midfielder, has accomplished just as much away from the field.

As a redshirt freshman, Healy played in 19 games. She also was named to the America East Academic Honor Roll, won the university’s Scholar Athlete Award and was named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association’s all-academic squad.

Prior to Maine, Healy scored a school-record 51 goals at Leavitt Area High School.

Also seeing time with the Black Bears is redshirt freshman Brooke Anderson of Lovell and Fryeburg Academy.

Going the distance

Local runners scored key team points in a pair of large cross country events last weekend.

In the University of New England Invitational at Biddeford, Andrea Rotz of Auburn led the host Nor’easters with a time of 21:40, good for 13th place.

Joining junior Rotz in then top 30 were junior Katie Wells of Chesterville (28th, 23:08) and sophomore Katie Stinson of Monmouth (30th, 23:17).

UNE finished second in the women’s race, two spots ahead of the University of Maine at Farmington. Sophomores Erika Hoddinott of Farrmington (24:03) and Jasmine Brooks of Peru (26:06) were the third and fourth-quickest UMF runners, respectively.

Lewiston senior Joe Fitzsimmons topped the UMF men in sixth place with a time of 28:18.

Southern Maine competed at the Connecticut College Invitational. Freshman Steve McCarthy of Greene and sophomore Forrest Tobie of Mt. Vernon crossed the wire among the top 100 runners.
