EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Rod Brind’Amour scored two goals and Matt Cullen had a goal and two assists, leading the Carolina Hurricanes to a 6-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils.

The Hurricanes, winners of their second straight, chased Devils goalie Martin Brodeur after just two periods. The reigning Vezina Trophy winner gave up five goals on 19 shots and was replaced by Scott Clemmensen to start the third.

Cam Ward, a rookie who earned his first NHL victory on Oct. 7 against Pittsburgh, stopped 27 shots for Carolina, which beat Washington 7-2 at home on Wednesday.

Carolina jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first period on a power-play goal by Radim Vrbata at 5:32. The Hurricanes pressured Brodeur frequently, forcing him to stop consecutive 2-on-1s in less than a minute during one stretch.

Carolina increased the lead to 3-0 with a two-goal flurry in a span of 17 seconds late in the period. After Devils defenseman Dan McGillis lost control of the puck near his own blue line, Erik Cole took the puck and skated in alone on Brodeur to make it 2-0 at 16:39. Cullen then scored on assists by Oleg Tverdosky and Josef Vasicek.

Jay Pandolfo scored New Jersey’s lone goal at 6:18 of the second period, crossing in front of the crease and backhanding a rebound of a shot by Richard Matvichuk past Ward that made the score 3-1.

Brind’Amour scored Carolina’s second power-play goal of the night in the second period when he slid what appeared to be a pass from a sharp angle to Brodeur’s left and the puck deflected in off the goalie’s skate. Brind’Amour added another goal in the third period against Clemmensen, gathering up a rebound of a shot by defenseman Mike Commodore and converting from in the crease.
