FREEPORT – Kay Evelyn Donovan, 73, died on Wednesday, Dec. 7, at home, after a long illness, with her family by her side.

She was born in Freeport on Feb. 27, 1932, a daughter of Kenneth Bailey and Hulda G. (Hamilton) Bailey. She was a graduate of Freeport High School, Class of 1951.

She married Lloyd J. Donovan on Oct. 19, 1957, and together they had two sons. Lloyd died in December 2001.

Kay worked on the family farm, Bailey Farm Hatchery, served as a waitress at Clara & John’s, and worked as a teacher’s aide in the Freeport school system. Her greatest job was being a homemaker for her husband and two boys.

She always thought of others first and was never quick to judge. For Kay, life was all about family. She loved and enjoyed the time she spent with her granddaughters.

She loved to cook, sew and hook rugs. She became known for the fine quality of her rugs and the pride she put into each. She also repaired antique rugs.

She loved pets, especially her Siamese cats. She was an avid reader and a patron of the Freeport Community Library. She enjoyed her time on Chebeague Island with her cousins and at the family camp at Notched Pond in Raymond.

She will be remembered for her kindness, generosity and thoughtfulness – qualities she received from her mother and passed on to her sons.

She is survived by her sons, Bradley J. Donovan and his wife, Sherry, of Durham, and Brian K. Donovan and his wife, Lauri, of Freeport; three special granddaughters, Jessica L. Donovan, Erin K. Donovan and Michele E. Nadeau, all of Auburn.

She was predeceased by her sister, Leah Bailey; and her brother, David Bailey.
