AUBURN – Lewiston-Auburn Community Little Theatre will present David Auburn’s Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play “Proof” in January.

After a sold-out off-Broadway run, “Proof” opened on Broadway in 2000. When it closed after 918 performances, it was the longest running non-musical on Broadway during the last 20 years.

The playwright then collaborated with Rebecca Miller on a screenplay, and a movie version was released in September. The cast includes Gwyneth Paltrow as Catherine, Sir Anthony Hopkins as Robert, Jake Gyllenhaal as Hal, Hope Davis as Clair and Gary Houston as professor Barrow.

Linda Britt, the show’s director, has tried to capture the play’s true emotional essence in Community Little Theatre’s production.

The play features Catherine, (Ellen Peters) a troubled young woman who has sacrificed her own college education to care for her mentally ill father, Robert (Mark Hazard), a professor and mathematical genius.

On the eve of her 25th birthday, Catherine must deal with the arrival of her estranged sister Claire (Liz Rollins) and the attentions of Hal (John Blanchette), a former student of her father’s who hopes to find valuable work in the 103 notebooks her father left behind. It soon becomes evident that Catherine may have inherited her father’s genius, his illness or both. “Proof” weaves together a complex family relationship, one woman’s search for her own identity and the mystery surrounding the authorship of an important mathematical formula.

Besides Britt, the production crew comprises Jason Pelletier, assistant director; Liz Rollins, producer; Ellen Peters, costume design; Marissa Jalbert, stage manager, assisted by Adam Blais; Richard Martin, lighting design; Anna Cyr, property mistress; Josie Baum, publicity manager; Bill Hamilton, set design; and Stan Spilecki, set décor. Working on set construction are Joel Salberg, Tim Traynor, Phil Vampatella, John Blanchette and Bob Spellman and family.

“Proof” will be presented Jan. 13 to 22 at the Great Falls Performing Arts Center. For tickets, call 783-0958 or go to the theater’s Web site at laCLT.com. Tickets are $15 for adults, $13 for senior citizens and full-time students.
