LEWISTON – Lionel Pierre Poirier, 86, of Lewiston, passed away Saturday, Jan. 28, at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center with his family by his side.

Born in Ste. Madeline, Canada, on Oct. 12, 1919, he was the son of Olivier and Lena Bonneau Poirier.

He was the founder of L.P. Poirier & Co. in 1943. In 1944, he left for his tour of duty in the Pacific and Japan. He was there for the signing of the peace treaty.

After his discharge, he reopened his excavating, lawn and paving business. In 1981, his son, Roland (Jerry) took over, increasing the business under the name of L.P. Poirier & Son Inc. Ray and Scott Poirier are continuing the business built by their father and grandfather.

He was a lifetime parishioner of Holy Family Church. He was an active member of the American Legion Post 22, Pine Tree State Beamers, the International Jim Beam Bottle Specialties Club and ACA Assurance, Chapter Dr. Paul J. Fortier 52.

His hobbies were bottle and coin collections. He was an avid golfer, bowler and snowmobiler. His favorite pastimes were working in his garden and playing cards with his friends and family. His biggest enjoyment was scratching lottery tickets, and he was very lucky. He also organized bus tours for seniors to Ste. George, Canada, Christmas in the fall and maple sugar trips, and also ones to Mohegan and Sun, Foxwoods Casino, Ste. Anne de Beaupre and Cape de la Madeleine.

No matter how busy he was, he always had time for his family and hosted many family gatherings.

He is survived by his wife, Dolores E. Poirier of Lewiston; two sons, Roland “Jerry” and his wife, Henriette Poirier, of Lewiston, and Maurice “Moe” and wife, Peggy Poirier, of Lewiston; one daughter, Pearl Roger of Lewiston; a stepson, Richard and wife, Doris Morin, of Greene; a stepdaughter, Caroline and her husband, Don Daly, of Kenner, La.; a brother, George Poirier of Lewiston; four sisters, Marie Beaudoin, Cecile Rodrigue and Catherine Bergeron of Lewiston, and Lena and husband, Armand Lapointe, of Old Orchard Beach; 12 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Cecile Labbe; two brothers, Ernest and Adlard; two sisters, Diana and Anita; and a son-in-law, Normand Roger.
