LACONIA, N.H. (AP) – New Hampshire environmental officials are pushing for a stricter law to speed the recovery of vehicles that go through the ice.

Now, if a car, ATV or snowmobile ends up in a lake, the owner can be charged with a violation for not having it removed as soon as safety and weather conditions permit.

But the Department of Environmental Services says that law is too vague. The agency is working an a bill that would give owners 72 hours to remove their vehicles or face daily fines of $300.

They say submerged vehicles present a variety of threats to water quality including gasoline, asbestos in brake pads and sulfuric acid in batteries.
