JAY – Lori James and her son, Dustin, escaped a fire at their mobile home early Wednesday after smoke detectors alerted them, a fire official said.

No one was injured.

“Smoke detectors saved their lives,” Jay Fire Rescue Chief Scott Shink said Wednesday.

Assistant Fire Chief George Brown said the cause was improper disposal of a cigarette.

About 30 firefighters from Jay and Wilton responded to the blaze reported at 4:30 a.m. at Hidden Circle. When firefighters arrived, Shink said there was heavy smoke coming from the trailer, which is about 14-by-70 feet.

Firefighters went in, knocked the fire down and contained fire damage to the bathroom where the fire is believed to have started, he said.

There was heavy smoke damage throughout the rest of the home, he said.

Firefighters used less than 500 gallons of water to put the fire out, he said.

Shink estimated that there was $15,000 to $20,000 damage. He said the trailer was insured and the American Red Cross was called in.

State fire investigators were on the scene Wednesday to try and determine the cause of the fire, Shink said.
