LEWISTON – Starting today, area homeowners can dispose of hazardous waste at the the Environmental Depot, the only permanent location in Maine dedicated to properly handling this waste.

The depot, at the Lewiston Solid Waste Facility on River Road, takes hazardous wastes such as old gasoline, cleaners, solvents, paint thinners, old pesticides, oil-based paints and varnishes.

It will be open from 8 a.m. to noon the first and third Saturdays of each month, until November.

The facility is a joint project of the Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments, Lewiston, Environmental Projects Inc. and the State Planning Office.

Most towns in the Androscoggin-Franklin-Oxford counties region participate in the AVCOG Environmental Hazards Program. Contact the solid waste facility or local town office for more information on use of the facility, or contact AVCOG at 783-9186.
