BATH – After two attempts of getting in the Class C track and field championships Saturday, the games committee pulled the plug because of the uncooperative weather.
A few events are in the books, including the shot put which was won by Lisbon’s Elijah Trefts for the second year in a row. Only the 3,200-meter relays were completed in the track portion along with a few preliminary races, while a few field events finished despite the soggy weather.
Initially, the pole vault was postponed until Monday at Bowdoin College with the remainder of the meet proceeding as scheduled.
Around 11:30 a.m. track announcer Lonney Steeves informed the crowd that the games committee had met and decided to continue with the events, but things would be sped up in an attempt to finish earlier than planned.
That announcement was untimely. Just as it was made, the boys’ 110 high hurdle prelims were delayed for roughly 20 minutes due to electronic problems at the finish line. After one heat, the committee met once again. This delay lasted longer than the electronic snafu.
The final announcement came at 12:15 p.m. This time, the meet was postponed along with Monday’s Plan B for the pole vault. All of the field events that were under way continued, while all other events were halted.
“A lot of it had to do with the conditions of the track,” said meet director Adam Mayo, as he held on to the middle stake of the officials’ tent with two hands as the swirling winds attempted to take out control central. “It had standing water on it. The MPA will meet Monday and decide what to do.”
The rain date for the meet is next Saturday, which is also the date for the New England championships. With the A championships shut down after one event and the C meet soon after, the New Englands wouldn’t see much representation from Vacationland.
“Technically, by the MPA, they have to make up the meet next Saturday,” said Lisbon coach Dean Hall. “But they may have to have a conference call. It wouldn’t be fair for the B’s to be (at the New England Championships) and not be represented by the A’s and C’s.”
According to the MPA, the Morse facility is not available next Saturday due to graduation.
Trefts was helped by the wet conditions. Just before the shot put started, he changed into a different pair of shoes to get better traction. His winning throw of 45 feet, 8 inches was his personal best this season.
“The rain ended up being in my benefit,” said the Lisbon senior. “It affected the others. Everybody threw worse than me.”
