AUBURN – Crews will close two lanes of Center Street beginning at 3 a.m. today, finishing up repairs on a Lewiston water line.
Work on the stretch of Auburn road should be finished in time for the evening commute, according to Lewiston Engineering Technician Wes Enman.
Lewiston crews were forced to close Auburn’s Center Street last week to repair a damaged 2-foot-wide water main. The main is the sole source of public water used in Lewiston. It carries about 4 million gallons daily.
The break was discovered about 5 p.m. Wednesday. Crews closed the entire stretch of Center Street for several hours, before opening one lane in each direction. They completed repairs to the pipe Thursday.
Enman said it’s Lewiston’s job to put Center Street back into tip-top condition.
The work could result in traffic delays. David Jones, public services director, said commuters should avoid the area and find alternate routes if they can.
