RANGELEY – A free screening for Scotopic Sensitivity Irlen Syndrome will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, at the Rangeley Public Library.
SSIS is a perceptual difficulty that prevents a person from learning basic skills in reading and writing and/or from using those skills efficiently and easily once they are mastered.
Screening is a simple process. Some indications of SSIS are when an individual misreads known words, individual looses place easily, has difficulty sustaining reading even if able to read the words, is easily distracted while doing paper, pencil tasks; has poor comprehension when reading material that would be more easily understood if presented orally; likes to read or work in dimmer or brighter light than others or has a problem with light: fluorescent, halogen or simply bright light.
Maxine Jaubert, specialist and certified Irlen diagnostician from the Washington, D.C., area, will administer the screenings. All are welcome.
