PHILLIPS – Sunny skies began and ended the day at Justafield Golf Teaching Center on Thursday of Old Home Week. The third annual Fun Day concluded with the golf ball drop. The powered parachute experienced problems, causing early release of the chute full of golf balls into a swamp at the edge of the field.
Following a conversation with pilot Doug Lisherness and Stacy Reed, it was decided to drop the balls again the following evening after the parade. That time the drop of 100 balls went smoothly and the winning ball landed five feet eight inches from the center of the target. The ball was purchased by Tom Saviello, and he said the prize of $250 will be donated to several groups in Phillips.
Winners of the six golf-related events were as follows:
Closest to the line, (five balls): first, Dick Fredland; second, Joey McDermott; third, Tyler McClure.
Putting contest (lowest score for fewest putts in nine hole on the practice putting surface): first, tie, 16 putts, Joey McDermott and Bradley Balduff; third, 17 putts, Tyler McClure.
Chip it golf, highest score (three balls, four tries): Joey McDermott (19); Sybil Stevens (17); Tyler McClure (11).
Velcro toss game (six balls) highest points: Tyler McClure (120); Shane White (85); Cayre Plog, (65).
Final curtain putt (five balls trying for a hole in one): Tyler McClure.
Three-hole scramble (three persons use each drive once): Winona Davenport, Joey McDermott, Tyler McClure.
Some of the remaining children who were too young to play competitively were helped by the older children and adults to hit a few balls and pick up balls with a shag bag and they were given a ride around the field in a golf cart.
In memory of Margaret Davenport, a canopy was purchased and set up to provide the relief from the heat.
