• That pickpockets reaped a harvest at the fair seems certain for yesterday morning some boys while playing on Montello street, Lewiston, which is not a great distance from the fair grounds, found eight wallets which had been gone through. Papers of no value except to the owner were left in the pocketbooks and will be returned when called for.
• Louis Miour of Auburn, a boy only 13 years of age, admitted in the Lewiston Municipal Court Friday morning that he had been a pocket peddler for the past six months. Miour was arrested Thursday at the Fair Grounds by Sturgis deputies, having been caught in the act of selling a bottle of whiskey. He was fined $50 and costs and sentenced to 30 days in jail. Being unable to pay the fine, he was sent to jail for two months.
50 Years Ago, 1956
• Monday’s election will be the first statewide general election held on Eastern Daylight Saving Time. Daylight Time was declared by the 1955 Maine Legislature to be the official time of the state between the last Sunday of April to the last Sunday of October each year. Previously, Maine’s official time was Eastern Standard Time the year around, although most communities adopted Daylight Time by local option.
•Mars flirted with earth tonight, giving us its closest tantalizing wink in 32 years. This time the red-hued planet may yield some answers to its secrets. Motion pictures through the telescope’s eye could help. Astronomers over the world tuned in telescopes, hoping to solve puzzles of Mars’ “canals,” its red deserts, its green or blue storms, thin polar icecaps, and mysterious “W” – shaped clouds sometimes seen on its face.

Maine’s summer tourism season officially ended Monday, but thousands of vacationers apparently didn’t get the message, as campgrounds and resorts reported continuing booming business.
Tourism officials in two resort areas said this year’s business is sure to eclipse the most successful season in recent memory five years ago.
