DEER ISLE (AP) – A New Jersey woman died while kayaking off the coast of Deer Isle, the Coast Guard said Tuesday.

Susan Wakelin was wearing a lifejacket but no cold water survival gear when her kayak overturned Monday night, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Etta Smith in Boston. The water temperature at the time was 56 degrees.

Wakelin, 60, of Rumson, N.J., was reported overdue at 8:58 p.m., Smith said. Her kayak was spotted at 3:20 a.m. on the west side of Deer Isle, and her body was found 22 minutes later a mile from where the kayak was located, she said.

The Coast Guard and Maine Marine Patrol were assisted by private boats on the water and volunteer firefighters along the coast. A Coast Guard helicopter dispatched from Cape Cod also participated in the search.
