Everyone has heard about the free website that allows its users to create a profile about themselves, comment to their friends, and create their own personal space. Myspace has become extremely popular, with its members in the millions. The website has become a huge hit with teenagers also. As a sixteen year old who wants to keep up with the latest technology, I too, have a myspace account and so do many of my friends. It gives us a chance to talk with each other and personalize a web page to our liking.

Lately in the newspapers or on television, people have been hearing about sexual assault cases dealing with users of myspace. Young girls have been targets of sexual predators whom they met on the website, who were pretending to be younger users. Reports of abuse and even kidnapping have been linked to myspace. This has led parents and some members of the government to question if myspace is really a good tool for teens to be using. So the question is rising, is myspace really safe?

As a fluid user of myspace, I can tell you that I feel perfectly safe while on it. The creators of myspace have said that they put great emphasis on being safe while on their site. They have hired hundreds of people who look through the millions of profiles daily, looking for inappropriate material or other things that do not belong on there. Of course, it is nearly impossible to find every inappropriate page, so they are definitely going to be out there. As far as meeting predators on this site, myspace gives you the option of putting your profile on public or private, which allows only your friends to see it. You can also block people who you find to be unusual.

All these precautions myspace has taken makes me feel incredibly safe. teenagers should know not to meet up with strangers they meet online. We have been taught that our entire life. If teens make smart choices and chat with their friends, then myspace can be a great tool and can be completely harmless.
