• The Congress Square Hotel of Portland is to have a handsome oak revolving set of doors at its office entrance. The present arrangement with vestibule has always been very unsatisfactory and now that several of the banks and other buildings have found the revolving doors to be so successful they are to be placed in use at the Congress Square.

• Kittery citizens think the delay in the government permission for the New England Telephone and Telegraph company to cross the Fort McClary reservation seems unnecessary. They have waited six months and the permission is not yet forthcoming.

50 Years Ago, 1956

• Nicholas Simones of 25 Mary St., Lewiston, was judged the winner yesterday among 47 entries in the Twin City Christmas lighting contest sponsored by the Lewiston Junior Chamber of Commerce. Second and third prizes went to two other Lewiston entries after last night’s judging. Alfred Gamache of 29 Second St., and Mrs. Cordelia Carrier of 6 First St. Extension won second and third places, respectively.

•Winter dumped the first load of snow – nearly five inches of it – on the Twin Cities yesterday in time of a really white Christmas.

25 Years Ago, 1981

• No doubt about it, the movies are growing up again. Just when it seemed we were lost forever to a second childhood, with nobody but Superman and the Raiders of the Lost Ark for Company, Hollywood is showering us with the likes of “Reds” and “Rollover” and “Ragtime.”
