WINSLOW – Zach Ward scored with 53 seconds remaining in overtime to lift Edward Little to a thrilling 4-3 triumph over Messalonskee in an Eastern Class A hockey clash Wednesday at Sukee Arena.

Billy Brewster notched his third assist of the night on the game-winner. Shawn Hird also assisted on the play. Adam Loudermilk was brilliant between the pipes in the extra session for the Red Eddies, making 11 of his 33 saves.

Hird produced a goal and two assists for EL (5-3-1), which jumped out to leads of 2-0 and 3-1. Matt Nyholm put EL on the board at 7:27 of the first period. Nyholm later combined with Brewster to set up Hird for the Eddies’ second strike.

Corey Larue sandwiched an EL goal between Messalonskee tallies by Ryan McCarthy and Derek Mosher. Justin Lawler’s power-play goal at 1:23 of the third period tied it for the Eagles (6-4). Mike Hachey made 32 saves for Messalonskee.

Poland/G-NG 14, Sanford 2

BIDDEFORD – Gardner Lajoie recorded a hat trick Wednesday and added an assist to propel Poland/Gray-New Gloucester to a 14-2 rout over Sanford in hockey action.

Brian Lagasse, Patrick Collins and Zach Arnold chipped in for Poland/GNG (4-4) with two goals each, while single tallies by Seth Champagne, Ben Piper, Eric Stewart, Cam Penney and Cory Cormier completed the scoring. Sean Bilodeau picked up the win in net for Poland.

Ben Gagnon and Cam Stuart each tallied goals for Sanford (1-5), while Jen Dezdenzo and Ron Clark split time in net.

Hebron 7, Middlesex 2

HEBRON – Hebron Academy scored five second-period goals and cruised to a 7-2 win over Middlesex.

The Lumberjacks exploded for four goals in a span of 90 seconds. Matt Pedemonti scored a hat trick, while David Woods, Julien Guerard, Joe King, and Josh Taylor also each added a goal.

Sasha Romanenko earned two assists, and Carmine Zegarelli, Josh Shanbaum, Matt St. Pierre, Eric Rodriguez, Joe King, and Josh Taylor each had one.

Basketball

Dirigo 65, Carrabec 21

DIXFIELD – Unbeaten Dirigo raced out to a 23-7 lead after one quarter and coasted to a 65-21 triumph over Carrabec in an MVC boys’ basketball game Wednesday.

Dirigo’s defense limited the Cobras (1-8) to seven points in the second half.

Colby Knapp led the way with 15 points, six rebounds and four steals for Dirigo (9-0). Spencer Berry added 12 points, four steals and five assists, while Tom Knight chipped in with 12 points, five blocks and three steals. Nick Manzer led Carrabec with nine points.

Richmond 47, Rangeley 37

RANGELEY – Marc Zaharchuk netted a game-high 15 points to lead Richmond to a 47-37 victory over Rangeley in an EWC boys’ basketball matchup Wednesday.

Glendon Kendrick chipped in for the Bobcats (9-0) with 10 points in a hard-fought win.

The Lakers (3-5) were paced by David Jensen with 13 points, while Ben Bliss added 11. Richmond jumped out to a 15-9 advantage in the first quarter and was never challenged.

Livermore Falls 42, Telstar 36

LIVERMORE FALLS – Davis Mercer drained 15 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to propel Livermore Falls to a 42-36 victory over Telstar in a MVC makeup game Wednesday.

Mike Durrell and Zach Keene chipped in for the Andies (6-3) with nine points apiece in the weather-delayed contest.

The Rebels (2-6) were paced by Ryan Kimball with 15 points and nine rebounds, while Louis Fortin contributed 11. Livermore Falls held a slim three-point advantage at the half, then pulled slowly away with an 11-6 run in the third.

Jay 61, Madison 55

JAY – Zane Armandi scored 24 points, Austin Clark added 17, and each played a pivotal role beyond regulation time as Jay downed Madison, 61-55, in double overtime in an MVC battle.

Armandi scored nine of Jay’s 15 points in the two extra sessions. He also finished with 10 rebounds and seven steals. Clark complemented his scoring with 16 boards and seven swipes. He also hit the go-ahead basket in the second OT.

Ezra Gourley topped Madison (1-8) with 21 points. Garrick Brown and Gabe Fernandes each chalked up 10.
