LEWISTON – City Councilor Lillian O’Brien pleaded guilty on Tuesday to a charge of driving to endanger stemming from an April 2006 crash at Russell and Sabattus streets.

Originally charged with driving while intoxicated, the former state representative was instead allowed to plea to the lesser charge.

On April 1, police said O’Brien’s car collided with another at the intersection at about 9 on a Saturday night. Nobody was hurt. Combined damage to the vehicles was estimated at $1,200.

Police said the 76-year-old Lewiston woman failed a field sobriety test following the crash.

Officers who investigated said O’Brien appeared intoxicated as she spoke with police at the scene. After failing to complete the field tests, she was taken to the police department and was issued a summons.

Because she was summoned rather than arrested, O’Brien did not go through the booking process at the county jail. Her car was towed from the scene of the crash.

After pleading guilty to driving to endanger, O’Brien will likely be ordered to pay a fine and face a license suspension, which is mandatory with a driving-to-endanger conviction. Details about that part of the hearing were not available Wednesday night.

O’Brien is known for her work with senior citizens, drug coverage and health care. She joined other Lewiston legislators advocating for a cleaner Androscoggin River.

The longtime Democrat recently finished her eighth consecutive year as a state legislator. Because term limits, she was unable to run again.
