Required updates

ISSUE: The town approved its first charter last year and is working to make required changes to existing town codes and ordinances.

SCOOP: Town councilors reviewed proposed revisions to the administrative code, Chapter 2; and a proposed ethics ordinance in dealing with conflict of interest, which calls for establishing a board to hear complaints of violations.

UP NEXT: A public hearing on both will be held at the town office April 3 prior to adoption.

Weight limits

ISSUE: Each year the town puts weight limits on many town roads that could be damaged in spring thawing and refreezing.

SCOOP: A total of 15 roads have been posted limiting the weight of vehicles using them to 23,000 pounds, effective through the end of April.

Victualer’s license

ISSUE: Businesses selling foods for public consumption are required to obtain a victualer’s license from the town.

SCOOP: After a public hearing, councilors granted a victualer’s license to Bootleggers (formerly Roopers) at 13 Village St. Two people voiced objections to the name of the establishment, as they thought it related to the illegal sale of alcohol during prohibition in the 1920s. It was generally agreed the town didn’t have the right to control business names.

Dispatch equipment

ISSUE: The telephone recorder in the police dispatch center has become costly to maintain and parts are hard to find.

SCOOP: Councilors approved the purchase of a new $10,900 recorder using grant money and allocated $5,450 as the town’s share of the cost.
