BETHEL – A display case, reminiscent of natural history cabinets assembled during the Victorian age, which contains a variety of mineral specimens from several antique collections, will be on exhibit during 2007 at the Bethel Historical Society’s O’Neil Robinson House.

The exhibit can be seen during regular hours from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday throughout the year and from 1 to 4 p.m. weekends whenever the museum shop is open.

The specimens have been loaned by Larry Stifler and Mary McFadden, as well as Jim and Anne Mann. The case is on loan from Jim Mann.

A display of mineral specimens and related items recently acquired by the society is also being created in the same room. Among the donors to the collection, which contains unusual specimens mined from several local quarries, are Addison W. Saunders, Mann, and Vandall T. King.

A third display case will contain selected specimens from the Stuart Martin collection, donated to the society in 2001 and on display in its entirety in the Robinson House in 2004-05.

The exhibit underscores the society’s plans for a new museum facility, to be constructed once the necessary funds have been raised, in a recreated ell and barn at the O’Neil Robinson House that includes dedicated spaces for the display and specially developed storage for mineral specimens, mining equipment and related materials – such as photos, documents and books.
