AUBURN – In recognition of National Community College Month, Central Maine Community College will host a number of activities and events in April.

April has been proclaimed National Community College Month in recognition of the role the nation’s 1,171 community colleges play in providing broad access to higher education, serving nearly half of the nation’s college students.

In addition, Gov. John Baldacci proclaimed April “Community College Month in Maine,” in recognition of the colleges’ first year as community colleges. This was one year after the Maine Legislature endorsed the governor’s proposal to rename and broaden the mission of Maine’s former technical colleges to community colleges.

Central Maine Community College will host an open house from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 7. Tours will be offered, and representatives from admissions, financial aid, transfer and support services and athletics will be on hand to answer questions. Culinary arts students will serve refreshments, and door prizes will be given out. The public is invited.

The fourth annual Androscoggin County Job Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, in the Kirk Hall Gym. More than 50 businesses looking for full-time, part-time and summer workers will be present to discuss opportunities.

Students from the occupational health and safety program will present a safety fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., also on April 11. Safety information and advice will be made available by students who are members of the Student Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers.

The college Corporate and Community Services Division and the Admissions Office will be featured “Spotlighters” at the Androscoggin Chamber breakfast at the Hilton Garden Inn on Thursday, April 12.

The college will host a professional exchange with South Korean university administrator Young Sun Kim on Wednesday, April 18. She will tour the campus and meet with several administrators. The event is sponsored through the Group Study Exchange program of Rotary International.

Other events are planned for later in the month, including the annual “Courage to Grow” Awards Dinner on Thursday, April 26, and the Career and Technical Education Centers Awards Banquet on Saturday, April 28.
