HALIFAX, Nova Scotia – The power went out at the Halifax Metro Centre on Tuesday night, and, for a while, it looked like it would cost the Lewiston Maineiacs a loss in Game 3.

The Maineiacs’ power play, which was extremely successful in Round 1 against Shawinigan and in Games 1 and 2 of the quarterfinals against the Halifax Mooseheads, went cold Tuesday, going 0-for-6.

“We have to improve on our power play, we didn’t execute on what we were doing, there’s no question,” Maineiacs’ coach Clem Jodoin said.

The Maineiacs did have a pair of power plays early that lasted less than 30 seconds, which helped to inflate the numbers, but for a power-play unit that had been clicking at better than 30 percent, going 0-for-anything was a disappointment.

Part of the futility can also be attributed to a good adjustment by the Mooseheads. After Chad Denny torched Halifax for three goals in Game 1 – two of them from the point, the Mooseheads started guarding Denny closely at the blue line.

“He’s a guy you have to be on all the time at the blue line,” Halifax coach Cam Russell said. “We have to be able to take him out or the equation.”

In Game 4, Denny shook loose and scored on a 5-on-3 power play in the first period. But, for the rest of the night, Lewiston’s power play was again futile.

Deja vu

After lunch Wednesday, the Maineiacs had the afternoon off to rest, relax and prepare for the game. If any of them turned on the television, though, there was a chance they were struck with a case of deja vu.

Eastlink Television, which televised Games 3 and 4, replayed Game 3 in its entirety, and even replayed a portion of the first period twice due to a technical glitch.

No matter how hard the Mooseheads likely hoped as some of them watched, the result from Game 3 remained the same, a 4-3 Lewiston victory.
