OXFORD – Selectmen canceled tonight’s meeting in order to concentrate on the time-consuming process of documenting the extensive flood damage in town.
“We’re inventorying the roads,” explained Town Manager Michael Chammings of the process each town must go through to document storm-related damage for the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Maine Emergency Management Agency. Funding for storm-related repairs may be available to towns and cities, based on the assessments.
Gov. John Baldacci declared a storm emergency on Sunday evening in anticipation of the powerful nor’easter that brought flooding and wind damage to the Oxford Hills and other parts of the state on Monday and Tuesday.
FEMA has deployed damage assessment teams to Maine. Agency officials say the assessment teams will look at the amount and type of damage, impact on the infrastructure or facilities such as roads and bridges, level of insurance coverage for homeowners and public facilities and assistance available from other sources such as federal, state, local and voluntary organizations.
Chammings said the process to document and submit damage reports will take several weeks. Town officials will meet with FEMA and MEMA officials later to begin reviewing paperwork.
Chammings said there was serious flooding on Rabbit Valley Road and other areas, but the good news is that the new drainage system the town put in the Pottle Street area to stop severe flooding problems did its job. “There were no drops of water,” he said after the area received five or more inches of rain. “Our preventative maintenance paid off.”
Fire Chief Scott Hunter said there was no serious flooding in the village area, where the river came up to the roadway but not above it, but road crews still have a lot of work to do in areas such as Number Six Road, Robinson Hill, Tiger Hill and East Oxford Road.
Several dozen cellars have been pumped out by the Fire Department, Hunter said.
Chammings said the selectmen’s meeting agenda was light so it will not be rescheduled. The next meeting of the board will be the regularly scheduled one at 7 p.m. May 3 at the municipal building on Pleasant Street.
