LEWISTON – Authors of a report urging massive investment in Maine’s infrastructure, less government spending and a different tax structure will present a progress report in Lewiston next week.

GrowSmart Maine is hosting a series of community meetings in every state Senate District, according to Communications Director Lee Burnett. Lewiston gets its turn at 7 p.m. May 8 at the Lewiston Public Library.

Alan Caron, president of the Yarmouth-based group, will lead a discussion on efforts to streamline government and new rules being considered by the state Legislature.

GrowSmart issued the report on cooperation last fall. The report, written by the Metropolitan Policy Program at the Brookings Institution, recommended streamlining state government and K-12 school administration.

That would free up money that could be invested in building a new, innovative economy, promoting land conservation, revitalizing Maine’s communities while preserving access to hunting, fishing and boating opportunities. Additional savings would go directly to tax reductions.

The meeting is free and open to the public.
