LEWISTON – “Women and Heart Disease: What’s the Big Deal?” will be the topic of a Central Maine Heart and Vascular Institute presentation set for Monday and Thursday, May 21 and 24.
Cardiologist Lynette J. Fahnestock of Maine Cardiology Associates will discuss the unique characteristics of cardiovascular disease in women.
The presentations will be held in the first-floor Young Wing conference room at 1 p.m. on Monday and again at 6 p.m. on Thursday. Light refreshments will be served. Anyone with questions should call 795-8240 or e-mail [email protected].
A native of Lewiston, Fahnestock earned her bachelor’s degree in biology from Goshen College in Goshen, Ind. She earned her doctor of osteopathic medicine degree at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford, and completed a cardiology fellowship at Maine Medical Center in Portland.
Her practice interests include echocardiography, nuclear cardiology and the treatment of cardiovascular disease in women.
Exercise class
LEWISTON – HealthSteps at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center has announced its Exercise for People with Arthritis class. The course is designed for individuals with rheumatic disease who are limited by impaired joint motion and/or strength.
The class will be offered from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, May 22 through June 21, at a cost of $22 (fee is waived for HealthSteps core members).
The course will teach breathing and relaxation techniques; introduce activities to promote body awareness, posture, balance and coordination; incorporate exercises to improve body mechanics, range of motion, strength and endurance; as well as give practical tips for self-care and better health.

Women’s program
LEWISTON – “Sex Offenders in My Neighborhood” will be presented by Marty McIntyre from the Sexual Assault Crisis Center and possibly someone from the Department of Parole for Sex Offenders from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 23, at Wisdom’s Center, 97 Blake St.
They will discuss the bills that are before the Criminal Justice Committee in an effort to find what works best for the protection of all. The session is for women only. For more information, call 784-0155.
