LEWISTON – “Excellent,” “awesome,” “extreme,” “challenging,” “fun” and “cool.” Those are just some of the words third-graders at McMahon Elementary School used to describe their new rock climbing wall.

The wall, purchased with funds from the Sisters of Charity Health System and private donors, helps students gain flexibility, muscular endurance and coordination. It also promotes teamwork and trust among the students.

Student Juliann Desjardins said the wall is “fun to climb but it’s hard. Sometimes you get tired trying to hold on.”

Physical Education Teacher Terry Knoll said the kids are having a blast. “There are so many things you can do with the wall, it’s incredible,” Knoll said.

Knoll said teachers are exploring ways to incorporate the wall into their regular curriculum, including math and science. Knoll said the teachers are having a great time climbing the wall too, and the kids enjoy watching them.
