BOSTON (AP) – Suffolk Downs’ signature race, the Massachusetts Handicap, will be revived in September after a two-year hiatus, the track’s largest shareholder announced Wednesday.

Richard Fields, the newest member of the track’s ownership team, said the race made famous by Seabiscuit would run on September 22, five weeks before the Breeders’ Cup World Championships.

The guaranteed winner’s share will be $300,000, and additional bonuses will be awarded if the winner has won multiple stakes races this year.

The race, best known as “MassCap,” was canceled in 2003, 2005 and 2006 due to a decline in business at the track.

Since the East Boston track opened in 1935, the race has played host to champion thoroughbreds such as Seabiscuit and Triple Crown winners War Admiral and Whirlaway.

Races also were canceled in the early 1990s when Suffolk Downs was closed.
