OXFORD – An Oxford man was charged with drunken driving and child endangerment Monday night after police stopped his car and found a firearm near his 2-year-old son. A 2-month-old son was also in the car.

James Jeffrey Grove, 25, of 266 Fore St., was charged with operating under the influence, carrying a concealed weapon and child endangerment, Norway police officer Dana Wessling said.

Grove’s girlfriend and children were driven home by another officer who responded to the scene, he said.

Wessling said Grove was pulled over around 9:30 p.m. Route 26 near Pottle Road. His blood alcohol level was .10 percent, he said. The legal limit in the state is .08 percent.

Wessling discovered a 22-caliber revolver behind the front passenger seat in a compartment “directly in front of” the 2-year-old, he said. Information was not immediately available on whether the weapon was loaded.

Grove told him his father had been shooting earlier in the day, and his father put the gun in the car, Wessling said.

According to Oxford County Jail records, Grove works as a nurse at Home Health Care. Officials at the jail say he was released on $300 bail.
