NORWAY – School’s out.
A Rowe Elementary School student came running out the door screaming over and over, “Freedom, freedom, freedom” as he frantically ran up and down the sidewalk with his arms outstretched.
Others were a little more reserved in their reaction. “Where’s my workbook?” asked one boy while another student hugged her teacher goodbye.
Students in the eight towns of SAD 17 attended their last day of school Friday and began summer vacation. At Oxford Elementary School children had an assembly; at Rowe, field days; at Oxford Hills Middle School in Paris, an eighth-grade closing ceremony; and at the Paris Elementary School, field trips.
Sixth-grade student Coty Herrick said he was going to spend his summer just having a good time. When asked how it felt to be out of school for summer, he smiled broadly and said “good.”
Some students got a special ride home in a Hummer limousine a parent rented for the afternoon to take her sixth-grade son Zack Knox and some of his friends to get an ice cream and then back to Zack’s house for a party.
“I’ve promised him since he was 6 years old I would do this,” said his mom, Pam Cayouette.
School reopens for students in grades kindergarten through seven and grade nine on Aug. 29, and for grades eight and 10 through 12 on Aug. 30.
