Issue: A recent court ruling said a municipal board cannot legally conduct business if one or more vacancies exist on the board.

The scoop: With two School Committee seats needing to be filled and only one name on the ballot for the May 19 town elections, it was clear that the second seat would have to be filled by a write-in candidate. When the ballots were counted, two residents had received votes; however, neither was willing to accept the seat. Directed by the town council to fill the vacancy, the School Committee named Melissa Hodgkin, the mother of three Elm Street School students, to fill the seat until the next regular municipal election.
