RUMFORD – Police have released the name of a 46-year-old man who was electrocuted Saturday morning after a tree he and his son were cutting down fell across power lines on Route 108.
Rumford police say that Joseph Mawhinney was killed shortly before 10 a.m. while trying to help his 23-year-old son, who was cutting the tree and received the initial charge of electricity.
As of late Sunday night, Rumford police would not release the identity of Mawhinney’s son, who was seriously injured and flown to a Massachusetts hospital to be treated for burns.
Rumford police also declined to explain why the identity of the injured 23-year-old man was being withheld.
According to Rumford Detective Sgt. Daniel Garbarini, Mawhinney was working a backhoe as his son cut the trees on the Smith Crossing property.
“The son had cut the tree, the tree tipped toward the power line, and at some point the son got some charge. He was actually touching the tree,” Garbarini said.
Mawhinney went to help his son and was then electrocuted himself, according to Garbarini.
