LOVELL – A Lovell photographer’s image of the Okefenokee Swamp will grace the United States Postal Service latest stamp – appropriately called the Okefenokee Stamp.
Photojournalist José Azel, whose work has appeared in National Geographic, Smithsonian, Life, Time Magazine, Sports Illustrated and Geo Magazine, will speak at a special pictorial postmark that will be offered at the Portland Public Library on June 28 to mark the issuance of the stamp.
The swamp, on the Georgia-Florida border, is a national wildlife preserve. The 69-cent international use stamp is part of the U.S. Postal Service’s Scenic American Landscape series.
Azel will discuss his work and will host a projection show of his Maine photography. Portland Postmaster David Guiney will present framed postal art, featuring the Okefenokee stamp, to Azel in recognition of his work being selected for a postage stamp.
The event is open to the public from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Postmaster Guiney’s presentation will take place at 5:30 p.m. The Portland Public Library is at 5 Monument Square, Portland, ME 04101.
