RUMFORD – Police remain tight-lipped regarding their case against a Rumford man charged with raping an acquaintance at a Cumberland Street address this week.

Patrolman Matthew Noyes arrested James J. Spitzer, 19, on a charge of gross sexual assault Sunday morning after Noyes, Patrolman Adam Sage and Tri-County domestic violence/sex crimes Detective Paul Casey investigated a rape complaint reported at 5:20 a.m. Sunday, Detective Mark Cayer said Wednesday afternoon.

Spitzer, who failed to post $3,000 cash bail, was taken to Oxford County Jail in Paris and will be arraigned Aug. 23 in Oxford County Superior Court in Paris.

Cayer declined to provide details about the arrest, which had yet to be listed in the arrest log on Wednesday. He did say the person was not a minor.
