Senior League

Ralph Maines of Casco is the player to catch as the Senior Golf League moves into the second half of its 8-tournament schedule. The league, for members who have reached their 50th birthday, began this season with Wednesday tournaments at Fox Ridge, Poland Spring, Point Sebago, Spring Meadows and Toddy Brook. This week’s tourney was rained out at Fox Ridge and rescheduled for Sept. 5.

Maines with 18-points for individual honors is 5 ahead of John Cunningham of Toddy Brook. The chase for the Club Award is much tighter as Poland Spring (35) holds a 3-point lead over Toddy Brook.

Individuals and clubs are awarded 6 points for low gross and low net, 3 points for second place, and 1 for third.

Maines, 66, playing out of Poland Spring, shot 77 to win the league’s inaugural tourney at his home course, won again the next week with an 83 at Fox Ridge where he aced the 178-yard #16 hole. Although he shot a respectable 85 at Point Sebago the following week, he was out of contention. A winning 79 last week at Spring Meadows put him back on top.

Following is the remaining schedule: August 22, Toddy Brook; August 29, Spring Meadows; Sept. 5, Fox Ridge; Sept. 12, a bonus tourney TBA.

Club members may join the Senior League at any time. Entry information is availabale at pro shops or by contacting the league office at 799-0983, or e-mail blaine7@maine.rr.com.
