Forty-five members of the Auburn Corn Roasters’ Association gathered at Rockemeko Park at the summit of Mt. Gile Sunday and enjoyed their annual corn roast. Charles Barker was the chef and was assisted by a large number of willing and expert workers so that the roast and boiled corn, clam chowder, boiled eggs, lobsters and all kinds of fruit were finely served.

For 25 years now have the Corn Roasters been in organization and the association is still as popular as ever. The membership is limited but there are always several applicants on the waiting list.

50 years ago, 1957

• Auburn police are keeping their fingers crossed. The first two days of the long Labor Day weekend passed without an accident being reported to authorities. Police were also pleased on another count. There were no arrests in Auburn for motor vehicle violations.

LONDON – A plastic surgeon declared today the post war bosom boom is going bust. Flying defiantly in the face of such contrary evidence as Sophia Loren, Jayne Mansfield and Marilyn Monroe, Dr. Patrick Clarkson said the tide has definitely turned to deflation.

• A crowd estimated at nearly 35,000 persons thronged to Lewiston fairgrounds yesterday for the opening day of the 102nd annual Maine State Fair.

25 years ago, 1982

• Approximately 50 off-duty Lewiston firefighters walked picket lines in front of Lewiston City Hall and in front of the home of Lewiston City Administrator Lucien R. Gosselin Wednesday afternoon to make their plight known to the citizens of Lewiston. Mayor Paul R. Dionne said the picketers, members of Local 785 of the International Firefighters Union, were asking to meet with the Lewiston City Council to discuss their contract negotiations, which have dragged on for nearly two years.

SKOWHEGAN – About 400 hooting spectators followed the Wednesday leap of a chain-bound Bangor escape artist as he disappeared into the murky Kennebec River and surfaced less than a minute later with arms free.
