OXFORD – Two men and a woman were arrested Thursday night and charged with stealing a utility trailer from Great Scott Storage on Route 26.
Crystal M. Decata, 28, of Old Orchard Beach, Michael J. Zelensky, 30, of Standish and Keith A. Norburg, 26, of Arundel were charged with theft. Decata was also charged with violation of conditions of release and Norburg with possession of burglary tools.
Sgt. Ricky Jack of the Oxford Police Department said the theft was reported by several witnesses at the nearby Wal-Mart. Jack said the trio pushed the 14-foot trailer, usually used for hauling ATVs and equipment, over a curb to the rear parking lot of the Wal-Mart, where they hooked it onto a Ford Expedition SUV and drove off.
Jack said the Mechanic Falls Police Department was alerted, and officers from that department soon stopped the vehicle heading south on Route 26.
Jack said the trailer contained markings from Great Scott Storage and was identified at the scene by its owner.
Chief Jeff Goss of the Mechanic Falls Police Department said Norburg, who was driving the Expedition, was also given summonses on charges of operating with a suspended license, failure to register a vehicle, towing an unregistered vehicle and two counts of illegal attachment of plates.
The vehicle had Florida plates and was seized after the arrests.
“At this point, we’re not even sure of the owner of the vehicle,” Jack said. “Right now I’m looking at it possibly being stolen.”
Jack said police were also trying to determine whether a trailer tongue, trailer stand and ATV winch in the vehicle had been stolen. He said a pair of bolt cutters in the vehicle brought the possession of burglary tools charge against Norburg.
Jack said he received different stories from the individuals as to why they had the trailer, though all identified it as belonging to a female who was letting them use it. However, Jack said no one was able to provide contact information for her.
Norburg and Zelensky made $500 cash and $1,000 unsecured bail, respectively. Jack said Decata had four sets of bail conditions and was held without bail until her arraignment at Paris District Court on Friday. She was then released on personal recognizance with conditions.
According to the booking sheets at the Oxford County Jail, Zelensky is scheduled to appear in the Oxford County Superior Court on Nov. 29.
