NORWAY – Norway-Paris Solid Waste will conduct its annual hazardous waste collection today at the station on Brown Street.
Workers from the Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments and the waste station will collect materials such as oil-based paint, pesticides, chemicals and solvents. Residents are advised to bring in materials with warning labels as well as items that contain mercury.
The collection aims to prevent improper disposal of hazardous materials, which can harm the environment and injure children, pets and workers at the station.
AVCOG asks that the materials be placed in their original, secure containers. Boxes or plastic bags may be used when appropriate. Residents are asked to place materials in their vehicle’s trunk or truck bed and to remain in the vehicle while the materials are removed.
The collection takes place from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the parking lot across from the trash compactor at the transfer station on Brown Street.
The service is free for residents from Norway, Paris, Buckfield, Hartford, Mechanic Falls, Minot, Otisfield, Sumner, Waterford, West Paris and Albany Township. Residents from other towns may dispose of materials at Norway for $27 for every five gallons of liquid waste or up to 20 pounds of dry waste.
