AUBURN – A school bus struck a middle school pupil Wednesday morning, sending the teenager to the hospital with a leg injury.

Derek Caron, 14, was riding a bike to school in the crosswalk on Court Street and was struck when a bus pulling out of the school parking lot turned onto the street and the driver failed to see the student, deputy police Chief Jason Moen said.

Bus driver Harold Witham, 76, of New Gloucester was not issued a citation after the investigation was concluded, Moen said.

About 15 students were on the bus when the accident occurred.

A woman waiting for the buses to pass said she heard her son yell, and she saw Caron fall to the ground. The witness said the bike was stuck under the tire of the bus and Caron’s foot was tangled in his bike wheel.

The woman did not want to be named because her own son attends the same school. She said she held Caron’s head up off a curb while waiting for rescue workers to arrive. A nurse passing by the area stopped at the scene to assist, she said.

The woman said several parents of middle school students have complained in the past that the exit on Court Street is the scene of frequent close calls and should be regulated with a traffic light.

Moments before Caron was hit, two buses driving into the lot stopped to make way for outgoing buses, the woman said. At that point, Caron thought he could cross when the bus driven by Witham pulled into the exit and struck him.

Caron was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where he was listed in stable condition.

Wednesday night.

The accident happened about 7:15 a.m.
